About the gallery

Bamboo House is a multidisciplinary art collective founded in 2025 by a group friends and artists who met at the Savannah College of Art and Design. The project emerged from the restoration of a historic Fire Island Pines residence belonging to artist and legendary hairstylist Paul McGregor, whose creative philosophy, “Follow Your Bliss,” continues to inform the collective’s practice. Bringing together distinct creative disciplines and perspectives, the collective embraces experimentation and collaboration to create work that transcends any single medium. Working primarily with found, salvaged, and discarded materials, Bamboo House explores themes of nostalgia, circularity, and reinvention, giving new form and meaning to objects with histories of their own. Artists: August West, Lærke Lillelund, Grace Brese, Fiona Gorman, Blayne Planit, Hana Hart and Marc Christensen.

01

Fiona Gorman

Role
Bamboo House artist

About the artist

Fiona is a filmmaker and photographer based in New York. She spends her days covered in paint, building sets for major film and television productions such as Apple TV’s Severance and Your Friends & Neighbors, Netflix’s The Beast in Me, Disney’s American Love Story, and many more. Seldom is she without a camera at arm’s length and with a sharp eye for the overlooked, she captures the moments and details others might miss.

02

Grace Brese

Role
Bamboo House artist

About the artist

Grace is a designer and artist who works with anything analog—from fashion accessories to collage to furniture. Her practice blends function with storytelling. She is the founder of Limbo Luck, a fashion label celebrating the in-between—where you’ve been, where you’re going, and who you’re becoming. Grace’s work honors the beauty of process, transformation, and learning to embrace your evolving path.

03

Lærke Lillelund

Role
Bamboo House artist

About the artist

Lærke Lillelund is a textile artist and designer based in Copenhagen. Her work is driven by experimentation and a fascination with the intersection of advanced technologies, such as digital fabrication, 3D printing, and laser cutting, and traditional textile techniques, including shibori dyeing and stitching. She creates powerful textile forms that resist fixed interpretation, inviting viewers to read them as organic, rhythmic, and open-ended. Alongside her independent practice, she works across costume, furniture, and production design, allowing these disciplines to continually inform and challenge one another. Her work has been exhibited at Design Miami/Paris and in several exhibitions throughout Copenhagen.

04

August West

Role
Bamboo House artist

About the artist

August is a creative director turned multidisciplinary artist who left a decade-long career in advertising to pursue a more creative existence (and use her skills to make her best friends famous).

In 2025, she founded Bamboo House, a living creative experiment born from her grandfather’s beach house on Fire Island. Together with her friends from Savannah College of Art and Design, she transformed the home using salvaged materials, original furniture, and site-specific installations. What began as a home renovation project has evolved into a shared creative philosophy, one that extends far beyond the walls of the original house.

05

Hana Hart

Role
Bamboo House artist

About the artist

Hana is an award-winning graphic designer and founder of Sabik Design, a branding and packaging design studio based in Breckenridge, Colorado. Her studio specializes in consumer packaged goods and hospitality, with designs found on the shelves of major retailers across the country. Look out for her signature doodles next time you’re walking the aisles of the grocery store.

06

Blayne Pearce Planit

Role
Bamboo House artist

About the artist

Blayne Pearce Planit is a visual artist based in New York City whose mixed-media paintings explore the invisible energies that shape the human experience. Working with acrylics, oils, wax, sand, gravel, and unconventional materials, she creates layered, textural landscapes guided by ritual and intuition. Each piece begins with words written directly onto the surface, followed by layers of mark-making that allow her to process emotions and move toward a sense of inner peace. Blayne sees her practice as a form of rebellion against disconnection, using art as a way to reconnect with the body and trust its natural instincts.

Paul McGregor

Role
Featured legacy artist
Portrait of Paul McGregor in the 1970s

About the artist

Paul McGregor (d. 2013) was an artist, hairstylist, and creative visionary whose work helped define the look and spirit of an era. Best known for creating Jane Fonda’s iconic shag haircut for the 1971 film Klute, McGregor operated his namesake salon on St. Marks Place in New York City, attracting artists, actors, and cultural figures.

Beyond the salon, McGregor was a prolific creator who found inspiration in the natural world. At his home in Fire Island Pines, he transformed objects found along the shore—from driftwood to horseshoe crabs—into original works of art. Rather than imposing a predetermined form, he often allowed the materials to guide him, letting a piece of wood become what it wanted to be: a totem, an abstract figure, a ballerina.

His final material obsession was bamboo, which he eventually used to cover his entire Fire Island home. Though the bamboo is now gone, its name lives on through Bamboo House, the artist collective founded by his granddaughter August and her friends in the home he left behind. Guided by his personal philosophy, “Follow Your Bliss,” McGregor’s spirit of experimentation and reinvention continues to inspire a new generation of artists.

08

Marc R. Christensen

Role
Collaborating artist & exhibition designer

About the artist

Marc is a multidisciplinary artist, curator, and cultural worker whose practice centers on queer memory, material intimacy, and beauty-making as acts of survival. Working across design, painting, photography, sculpture, and writing, he documents the emotional architecture of queer life—its sanctuaries, eros, traditions, and intergenerational kinship.

Marc is a founding force behind several creative platforms, including the Visitors Center, Fire Island Tea, and Queer Culture Arts Foundation (QCAF), through which he curates exhibitions, residencies, and community rituals. His curatorial efforts, including his ongoing partnerships with the Pines Historical Society, Fire Island Pines Arts Project (FIPAP) Biennial, and Tom of Finland Foundation, seek to create lasting opportunities and support for queer artists.
