About the gallery

Founded in 2009 by Erwin John and Stevenson A. Dunn, Jr., The Bishop Gallery is a Brooklyn-based contemporary art gallery connecting emerging talent with the legacies of historically significant artists. Rooted in a commitment to underrepresented voices, the gallery champions artists including Jabari Jefferson, Sophia Victor, Quiana Parks, and Charles Jean-Pierre through exhibitions, artist residencies, and relationships with collectors and institutions. Its work extends to significant institutional placements, including facilitating the gift of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture’s first Jean-Michel Basquiat artwork and its acquisition of Alexis Adler’s photographs of the artist. The gallery also organized Our Friend, Jean, a traveling exhibition of early Basquiat works presented across six Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Bringing together scholarship, community engagement, and a discerning eye for new talent, The Bishop Gallery creates opportunities to discover and collect artists shaping the cultural conversation.

About the artist

Jules Be Kuti is an emerging artist born in 1993. His art reflects his experience as a black person living in France, as well as his thoughts on the challenges faced by black people in society. Jules Be Kuti grew up in France and was inspired by the richness of black culture. He thus uses his art as a vehicle for intimate reflection, enabling him to explore the dynamics of memory and identity in a globalized world of increasingly blurred national and cultural borders. Destiny Branay

Portrait of Destiny Branay

About the artist

Destiny Branay (b. 1998) is a Baltimore based oil painter whose starry-eyed portraits serve as a reminder that maintaining hope is a practice necessary for survival. Inspired by the 1973 song by Boris Gardiner, Every Nigger Is a Star, along with innumerable other stories of Black resilience, Destiny references her familial photo archive to weave the past, present, and future into vibrant, new imaginings of Black everyday life. Aside from her degree in Fine Art from the Community College of Baltimore County, she is mostly self taught, allowing intuition to be her guide.
