About the gallery

Founded in Los Angeles, SABBATIKAL is a contemporary art gallery and curatorial platform dedicated to experimentation, meaningful encounters, and unconventional approaches to exhibition-making. Taking its name from the idea of a purposeful departure from ordinary patterns of work, Sabbatikal champions artists whose practices challenge familiar ways of seeing and invite sustained engagement. With a new exhibition space in Downtown Los Angeles, the gallery continues to expand its program of exhibitions, collaborations, and artist-led projects. At SCOPE Miami Beach 2026, Sabbatikal presents two solo exhibitions featuring the paintings of J. Carino and the sculptures of Thomas Deininger.

J. Carino

Portrait of J. Carino

About the artist

J. Carino (b. 1988, Littleton, Colorado) is an American painter whose vividly colored, allegorical landscapes explore queer identity, mythology, intimacy, and humanity’s relationship with the natural world. Reimagining pastoral traditions through a distinctly queer perspective, his paintings examine themes of transformation, environmental precarity, and collective belonging. His solo exhibitions include Carry It With You (2025) at Yossi Milo, New York, as well as presentations at Rhodes Contemporary, London; Monya Rowe Gallery, New York; and Sow & Tailor, Los Angeles. Carino holds a BFA from Parsons School of Design and is pursuing an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art, London; his work is held in the permanent collection of the Bakersfield Museum of Art, California.

Thomas Deininger

About the artist

Thomas Deininger (b. 1970, Boston, Massachusetts) is an American contemporary artist whose intricate anamorphic sculptures transform discarded consumer materials into striking optical illusions. Working primarily with non-biodegradable plastics and found objects, Deininger explores the intersections of mass consumption, environmental degradation, and human perception, creating compositions that shift between recognizable imagery and seemingly chaotic assemblages as the viewer changes perspective. Based in Tiverton, Rhode Island, his practice reflects a longstanding commitment to environmental conservation and the transformative possibilities of discarded materials. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Max Ernst Museum in Germany, and is held in private collections worldwide.
