Ian Sonsyadek

Portrait of Ian Sonsyadek

About the artist

Ian was born in Ukraine and emigrated to the States at a young age. He was raised in Chicago and had a 6 year interim in Milwaukee for undergrad and work, and back to Chicago after that. Being in quickly developing urban centers for most of his life honed his awareness of not only the constructed landscape, but of the implications that developing urban environments have on the migrations of people, culture, and the natural elements therein. The navigating, bulldozing, building, and shifting of the assembled metropolis mimics the activity of his art making, and vice versa.

About the artist

Brian Schneider is a multi-disciplinary artist from Greenfield, WI. He received his BFA in 2014 from the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design and currently creates and shows work at Var Gallery and Studios in Milwaukee. Brian works in drawing, painting, photography, mixed media sculpture and digitally.

“My focus in the studio is creating custom panels of various shapes, which are then partially masked and painted over or otherwise altered. To create these pieces, first a recessed panel is created, and individual pieces of wood are cut, shaped and painted to fit within these panels. The patterns of the panel create the ground on which the oil painted forms are meticulously rendered. I’m interested in this process of defacing what I so carefully constructed.”
