About the gallery
Founded by Yiwei Lu in 2019 in Los Angeles, Yiwei Gallery is dedicated to fostering cultural exchange through exhibition-making and supporting artists whose practices span disciplines and geographies. Originally conceived as a platform for underrepresented voices in contemporary art, Yiwei Gallery has consistently centered artists from East Asia and its diaspora. From 2021 to 2024, the gallery operated in Venice Beach, CA. In 2024, the gallery launched a second location in Wuhan—a 5,000-square-foot venue focused on experimental programming—where works by American, European, and Chinese artists are frequently shown in dialogue.
About the artist
Mary Lai is a multidisciplinary Korean-American artist based in Los Angeles whose vibrant paintings, mixed media works, illustrations, murals, and sculptures explore identity through symbols, storytelling, and recurring motifs. Drawing on more than 20 years of experience in art and design, she blends memories and imagination with dynamic compositions, rich color, and signature textures to uplift and evoke emotion. She earned a BFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts and brings the influence of her decade-long career as an award-winning fashion accessories designer in New York City to her work which has been exhibited internationally and featured in major publications with a list of notable collectors. Her collaborations include HBO Max, W Hotel, American Express to founding Allied Special Projects, an artist-led platform that creates opportunities for artists, extending her commitment to creating and curating art with impact.
